February 9th Lunch Lecture with The Reverend Thomas F. Johnson

Join us for lunch and insights from The Reverend Thomas F. Johnson – Head of School and co-founder of the Neighborhood Academy.

Topic: Tying Ties & Other Lessons From School.

Among the many challenges facing the future of American education is the phenomenon of bright, ambitious youngsters trapped in a cycle of generational poverty and complex social burdens that discourage the pursuit of higher education.

The Neighborhood Academy, the only independent college preparatory school for low-income youth in Pittsburgh, is dedicated to developing the minds, bodies and spirits of its students, so that they might become fully productive members of society.

Its philosophy is founded on the belief that its students face unique challenges and require much more than school to learn. Its curriculum is based on the practice of civility, disciplined academic work, athletic competition, critical thinking, ethical reflection, artistic expression and service to others. Now in its eighth year, the school to date boasts a 100% college acceptance rate.

The Reverend Thomas E. Johnson, Jr. is Head of School and co-founder of the Neighborhood Academy. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, he has served as pastor to Allegheny United Church of Christ on the North Side and East Liberty Presbyterian Church. Before establishing the innovative program that would develop into TNA, he spent ten years as a teacher, coach and board member at his alma mater, Shady Side Academy. Rev. Johnson addresses audiences across the region on issues affecting education and low-income youth.

On Tuesday, February 9th, 2010, from noon - 1:30 pm

From Scottish Kings to a Pittsburgh Robber Barron...

The Dunfermline Malt Whiskey Society promotes appreciation of malt whiskey at Allegheny HYP Club with monthly scotch tastings.

The Dunfermline Malt Whiskey Society is currently in its second full season in Pittsburgh. As a point of reference and background, Dunfermline is the ancient city seat of Scottish kings (Malcolm I and Robert the Bruce are buried there) and the historical capital of Scotland. It is also the birthplace of Pittsburgh's most famous citizen, Andrew Carnegie, a life-long Scot who always remained loyal to his Scots heritage and his whiskey.

Who is Eligible for Attendance: Discreet ladies and gentlemen from all walks of life who have a zest for life and a curious predilection for malt whiskey. This includes landed gentry, international hommes et femmes d'affaires, dandys, beaux and belles, dreamers and idlers, attorneys-at-law and men-about-town, artists, musicians, dancers, bohemians, and anyone with a penchant for flair and flamboyance.

Who is Not Eligible for Attendance: Boors, dullards, drunkards, pundits, malcontents, misanthropes, miscreants, narcissists, or Fascists.

Mission: While the general mission is to help develop an appreciation and love of malt whiskey in all its varied forms, there are other benefits of the society. As a noteworthy Oxfordian once said,

To become acquainted with malt whiskey as an art is at best to explore the mind of God and at worst, to take leave, even if for a few moments, from the banalities of the day. Its golden amber hues, its complex dance of brine, peat, fruit, and barley upon the palate, its invigorating effect upon the wit, and its healing balm for the spirit . . .

Well, there is much more, but hopefully you get the point. Come learn. Come enjoy.

Upcoming Scotch Tasting Dates:

January Lunch Lecture with Dr. Aris Candris — President and CEO, Westinghouse Electric Company

Join us Tuesday, January 12 for our Lunch Lecture with Dr. Aris Candris — President and CEO, Westinghouse Electric Company

Meeting the World's Energy Needs in a CO2-constrained environment – The Role of Nuclear Power

America’s dependence on imported oil has been much-discussed for years but remains largely without an implemented solution. The 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen has focused the United States’ attention on reduction of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. What is the role of Nuclear Power in addressing the complex interaction of these two major issues?

Dr. Aris Candris, President and CEO of Westinghouse Electric Company, will present an informed perspective on the past, present, and future of Nuclear Power in both the USA and the World. A career Westinghouse employee since 1975, Dr. Candris will reflect also on Pittsburgh’s history in Nuclear Power and how Nuclear Power’s “Renaissance” has resulted in employment and economic gains for our Region.

Dr. Candris holds a BA degree in Physics, Math, and Engineering from Transylvania University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Nuclear Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He is active with both schools in Board or Advisory Board capacities, and he is a member of the Nuclear Energy Institute and the World Nuclear Association Board of Directors.
